Perve Gallery is pleased to announce its participation in the next edition of Photo Basel 2026, which will take place at Volkshaus Basel from June 15th to 21st, with the opening day, June 15th, reserved exclusively for invited guests.
At booth 17, Perve Gallery presents a selection of artists whose photographic practices reflect the gallery's ongoing commitment to fostering dialogue between historical and contemporary perspectives, cultural memory, and experimental approaches to image construction. The presentation brings together works by João Artur da Silva (b. 1928, Portugal/United Kingdom/Canada), Renée Gagnon (b. 1942, Montreal, Canada), José Chambel (b. 1969, São Tomé and Príncipe/Portugal), Bogdan Gulyay (b. 1980, Ukraine), and Martin Wöllenstein (b. 1991, Germany).

In its debut participation at Photo Basel, Perve Gallery presents a selection of artists whose photographic practices reflect the gallery's commitment to promoting dialogues between historical and contemporary perspectives, cultural memory, and experimental approaches to image construction. Bringing together works by Bogdan Gulyay, Martin Wöllenstein, João Artur da Silva, José Chambel, and Renée Gagnon, this presentation highlights photography as a medium through which personal, social, and collective narratives are constructed, preserved, and reinterpreted.
Through exhibitions, research projects, publications, institutional collaborations, and participation in the most relevant international art fairs, Perve Galeria has developed a program dedicated both to the rediscovery of unjustly forgotten artistic legacies and to the promotion of contemporary practices that expand the boundaries of visual culture.
Bogdan Gulyay (b. 1980, Ukraine) works with analog photographic processes, including silver gelatin painting and lithograph printing. His most recent works address the realities of war, exploring its impact on landscapes, architecture, and human experience through images that balance documentary testimony with poetic reflection.
Martin Wöllenstein (b. 1991, Germany) presents photographs taken during his years living in Cuba, where his interest in Afro-religious traditions, ritual practices, and collective forms of cultural expression emerged. These works anticipated themes that would continue to mark his interdisciplinary practice, including community, spirituality, and cultural exchange within the African diaspora.
A central presence in this presentation is João Artur da Silva (b. 1928, Portugal/United Kingdom/Canada), a pioneering multidisciplinary artist and founder of the Portuguese Surrealist Group in the 1940s. His experimental photographic works, produced during his years living in London (1950s-1970s) and only recently printed for the first time through Perve Gallery, reveal a remarkably innovative exploration of photographic language and image construction.
José Chambel (b. 1969, São Tomé and Príncipe/Portugal) develops a photographic practice based on the preservation of cultural heritage and collective memory. Working between Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Cape Verde, their images document both ancient and immaterial materials, contributing to contemporary reflections on the identity and representation of Lusophone cultures.
Renée Gagnon (b. 1942, Montreal, Canada) builds bridges between photography, visual arts, and sociocultural research. His most recent works revisit the photographic archive he created during research conducted in the musseques of Luanda in the early 1970s, transforming historical documentation into new visual narratives that reflect on memory, history, and post-colonial experience.
Together, these artists demonstrate the diversity of contemporary photographic practice, from documentary and anthropological approaches to experimental and conceptual investigations. With this presentation, Perve Galeria reaffirms its commitment to promoting unique artistic journeys, simultaneously creating meaningful connections between generations, geographies, and cultural contexts.
Perve is a cultural structure dedicated to the promotion, research, and dissemination of modern and contemporary art, with a particular focus on historical, social, and political contexts.
