The exhibition recovers and updates a dialogue that began at a time when Perve was already affirming the urgency of presenting artists deeply rooted in their cultural heritage, but capable of constructing contemporary languages with international validity and impact. Just as then,2MMIt affirms an Africa that reinvents itself based on its own references, rejecting stereotypes and imposed models, and proposing an interpretation of modernity constructed from multiple peripheries, in a gesture of affirmation of artistic and cultural freedom.
Reinata Sadimba, an unavoidable reference in contemporary African ceramics, is presented at a moment of strong international recognition, with her work highlighted in the exhibition.The power of my hands, at SESC Pompeia, in São Paulo, after having held a solo exhibition at Art Dubai, one of the most important global platforms for contemporary art. Her practice, transcending the Makonde tradition and placing the experience of women at the forefront, transforms ceramics into a territory of narrative, memory, body, motherhood and resistance, affirming a language that is simultaneously ancestral and radically contemporary, where creation asserts itself as a space of autonomy and freedom.
Ernesto Shikhani, a central figure in Mozambican painting, has also consolidated unparalleled international recognition over the last two decades. Following his inaugural dialogue with Reinata at Perve, in 2018 he became the first Mozambican artist permanently residing in the country to participate in the prestigious Spotlight section at Frieze Masters in London, one of the world's most important art fairs. His work, marked by a strong symbolic, spiritual, and political dimension, articulates tradition, knowledge, identity, and social critique, affirming a painting where ancestral memory and reflection on African modernity intersect as an exercise in critical freedom and affirmation of thought.
