Following international recognition at the Spotlight section of the Frieze Masters in London, the House of Liberty - Mario Cesariny it presents Anatomy of Dreams, the first solo exhibition of Teresa Roza d’Oliveira (1945–2019) since its presentation on that global stage. The exhibition delves into the unique universe of an artist who, between Mozambique and Portugal, built her own language to address themes often silenced by official history.
In the collected works, an intimate mythology emerges, inhabited by anthropomorphic figures and animals that seem to spring from a memory that is simultaneously collective and personal. Teresa Roza d’Oliveira summons these presences to explore the tensions of sexuality and the weight of social and political violence, sometimes focusing, in a raw way, on the condition of women and the sovereignty of their bodies. There is no intention here to illustrate concepts or to adopt a didactic discourse; its power lies in the strength of the images, allowing the strangeness of the figures to reveal the marks of time and power structures.
In this Anatomy, the dream manifests itself in all its ambiguity, oscillating between the ethereal and confrontation. The artist's practice transforms lived experience into a field where the human and the animal intertwine, questioning norms and limits imposed on bodies and identities. By presenting this selection, Teresa Roza d’Oliveira is reaffirmed as an unavoidable feminist voice, whose work resists simplistic interpretations and challenges the observer with disconcerting honesty.
The exhibition is part of a broader presentation of her work, which includes her participation by Perve Galeria at ARCOlisboa, between May 28 and 31, highlighting the relevance and renewed critical attention surrounding her career.
