JAS: Junction, Abstraction, Surrealism

The exhibition is presented at number 17 of the Perve Gallery. JAS: Junction, Abstraction, Surrealism, an anthological exhibition dedicated to John Arthur da Silva (b. 1928). A leading and surviving figure of the historic group The Surrealists, founded in 1949, João Artur is celebrated here through a journey that spans different periods of his production, bringing together sculpture, drawing, painting, and photography. At 97 years old, the artist remains artistically active in Canada, affirming the continuity of a practice that transcends generations. The exhibition also coincides with the presentation of his work by Perve Galeria at ARCOlisboa, reinforcing the relevance of his career in the contemporary context.

The exhibition title, which plays on the acronym of the author's name, summarizes his working methodology. The Junction manifests itself in the way João Artur da Silva articulates worlds and materials, operating a synthesis between the rigor of the European avant-garde and the formal freedom that has always characterized him. Abstraction emerges not as an end in itself, but as the territory where line and color follow the rhythm of free thought. At the center of everything remains Surrealism, understood not as a historical movement, but as an attitude towards life and creation.

In the collected works, a practice based on the articulation between form and thought is evident. João Artur da Silva constructs a vocabulary where volumes, lines, and surfaces are organized into dynamic systems, rejecting fixity and opening space for multiple interpretations. Each work thus suggests not a solution, but a field of possibilities. JAS: Junction, Abstraction, Surrealism is, therefore, an essential testament to the persistence of the avant-garde and the vitality of one of the most singular names in 20th-century Portuguese art.
