A coleção integra ainda o espólio artístico e documental de Mário Cesariny, bem como acervos de livros de arte, livros de artista e multimédia interactivo artístico.

Introduction

The Collection of Works of the Casa da Liberdade – Mário Cesariny began to be assembled in the 1990s, currently integrating different nuclei dedicated to distinct moments, geographies, and practices of artistic creation. Among these are Surrealism in Portuguese and International, the Portuguese Avant-gardes and Neo-avant-gardes of the 20th century, International References, Modern and Contemporary African Art from Portuguese-speaking countries, Latin America, African Primitivisms, and Emerging Portuguese and International Art. The Casa da Liberdade also houses the artistic and documentary estate bequeathed by Mário Cesariny, along with collections from other artists who shared with him a conception of artistic and intellectual freedom.

The collection is complemented by three important archives dedicated to art books, artists' books, and interactive multimedia art, comprising thousands of entries. More than adhering to a strict definition of Surrealism, the Casa da Liberdade collection is unified by the idea of freedom associated with the thought and work of Mário Cesariny, encompassing works and documents related to different forms of artistic, conceptual, and intellectual experimentation.
